A move to ban fracking in Florida is advancing in the Florida Senate. Fracking or hydraulic fracturing, involves injecting large volumes of high-pressure fluids into rock formations to help release natural gas and oil. Senator Doug Broxson, who voted for the proposal, still expressed concerns that the ban could negatively impact the oil industry. Environmentalists have opposed fracking and point out that Oklahoma, where fracking is used, has recorded 2,000 earthquakes in two years. The Florida Petroleum Council opposes the proposals, contending that fracking is safe, can boost production and can help hold down energy costs for consumers.
