The World Meteorological Organization has decided to retire Florence and Michael as names for hurricanes. Names for hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico are changed every year, but are retired if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be considered inappropriate. There have now been 88 names retired from the Atlantic basin list since storm names began in 1953. The organization voted to replace Florence and Michael with Francine and Milton. The new names will appear on the list of storm names in 2024.
