The National Park Service is expected to reopen Battery Cooper Loop Road at Fort Pickens after contractors for the National Park Service removed an observation booth on a historic tower that was in danger of collapsing. The two-story concrete observation booth was built in 1943, along with Battery 234, to direct the firing of artillery at the battery. Park Superintendent Dan Brown said they will be working with National Park Service historians, the State Historic Preservation Office, and the community to develop a long-term preservation plan for the historic tower.
