NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico South of Pensacola just before 2pm yesterday after a test flight by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company. SpaceX launched May 30th from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Their capsule safely parachuted into the Gulf. Hurley was the pilot of NASA’s last space shuttle flight in 2011. The last time NASA astronauts returned from space to a water recovery was 45 years ago in July of 1975, in the Pacific. It was the first flight of a commercially built and operated spacecraft to carry people to and from orbit. Plans are for another SpaceX crew launch as early as next month and possible tourist flights next year.
