PENSACOLA CONFEDERATE MONUMENT

U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers has ruled that a lawsuit to stop the City of Pensacola from removing its Confederate monument will stay in federal court and has extended the restraining order preventing the removal of the monument until September 7th. Judge Rogers ruled that the city did follow proper civil procedure when it had the lawsuit moved to federal court. Several groups including The Ladies Memorial Association, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, brought the lawsuit saying removing the monument would violate the groups’ constitutional rights, as well as state and federal law. The city has filed a motion asking the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that all of the current plaintiffs lack standing to sue the city over the removal.
