Escambia County is seeking federal funds to improve drainage in Ferry Pass neighborhoods that flooded during Hurricane Sally and during the floods of 2014. A large drainage pond south of Ellyson Industrial Park drains into a 20-foot ditch that leads into a 6-foot ditch that can’t handle the outflow from the retention pond. Commissioner Robert Bender told the News Journal when the area flooded in 2014, the county made repairs but was not able to increase the drainage capacity. Bender said the county is going to study the entire drainage basin to learn how it behaves and will use that information to apply for funds from federal agencies, including the FEMA.
