Ascend Performance Materials in Gonzalez is working to restart production at their plant following a weekend power failure that led to releases of chemicals. The power failed at the plant on Old Chemstrand Road just before midnight on Friday, leading to the release of anhydrous ammonia, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide that lasted for 33 hours. No injuries were reported. The power outage was caused by a failure of both the primary and back-up electricity supply systems from Gulf Power and resulted in a complete shutdown of the facility. No timeline was given as to when production will resume.
