Walton County commissioners have not taken any action on a request from a local businessman to have a Confederate flag and monument to removed from the courthouse in Defuniak Springs. Peter Horn III, a Walton County native and homebuilder, made the request at Tuesday’s commission meeting. Last June, Commissioners voted to keep the flag flying as part of the memorial. The memorial was erected in 1871 at a church and moved to the courthouse in 1926. The Confederate battle flag, was added in 1964. Six years ago, the Commission voted to replace that flag with the “Stars and Bars”, the first flag of the Confederate States of America. After some public discussion Commissioners closed public comment without offering any comments of their own.
