Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson says the Sheriff’s Office is implementing a plan to reduce the growing number of reckless driving incidents on the Garcon Point Bridge. Sheriff Johnson said at least three deputies will monitor traffic on the bridge – two deputies near the bridge much of the time and a third patrolling the area south of the bridge. The traffic detail will be funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. Traffic on the Garcon Point Bridge has increased five-fold since the closure of the Pensacola Bay Bridge in September going from 7,000 vehicles a day to around 35,000 a day. During a five-day span from February 28th to March 4th, there were also two fatal crashes on the bridge.
