Republicans in the Florida House of Representatives want voters to decide if school board members should be paid. If passed, those elected and reelected after November 8th, 2022 will not receive a salary. District 2 Representative Alex Andrade is on this committee and supports the proposal, but said that his support for the resolution does not reflect on the work of the Escambia and Santa Rosa County school boards. He says not paying school board members is a common practice across the U.S. In the Panhandle annual salaries for school board members are $41,336 in Escambia County, $38,160 in Santa Rosa County, $39,005 in Okaloosa County and $32,745 in Walton County. The resolution needs a 60% vote in both the Florida House and Senate for it to be put on the ballot where it will then need the approval of at least 60% of Florida voters.
