What major a Florida college student picks may determine how much money they receive from their Bright Futures scholarship. The bill’s sponsor says the goal is to ensure students have the best chance of getting a job after graduation. Nearly three million Florida students have helped pay for college with a Bright Futures Scholarship, but State Senator Dennis Baxley says some degrees aren’t resulting in jobs. The bill would establish a list of programs that aren’t likely to result in employment and reduce funding for scholarship recipients who choose to pursue those degrees. However, an online petition against the bill has received more than 100,000 signatures.
